Many scientists have been working for decades on the antitumor effect of probiotics. Last century, I. Bogdanov proved that Lactobacillus bulgaricus inhibits the growth and proliferation of tumor cells of Sarcoma 180, implanted in mice. Kitazawa (Japan) established an antitumor effect of yoghurt in mice with implanted tumor cells. Hosono (Japan) found that the antitumor effect of yoghurt is due to lactobacilli. The aims of the study were to determine in vitro and in vivo the anticancer activity of a probiotic formula with Lactobacillus bulgaricus DWT1 and its effect as a nutritional therapy in patients with colorectal carcinoma.
Cell lines HT-29, 3T3, BJ, MDA-MB-231 were used to study the antiproliferative effect on colon carcinoma and direct cytotoxicity. Cell lines RAW 264.7 of mouse macrophages, microarray of RNA samples for gene expression, PCR, ELISA were used Ex vivo. In vivo treatment and collection of peritoneal cells, oral treatment, pancreatic cancer induction and mice treatment, tumor induction and dissection were used. 46 patients with colorectal carcinoma were objectively monitored.
The probiotic formulation with Lactobacillus bulgaricus DWT1 demonstrated a significant antiproliferative effect and inhibits the growth of colon carcinoma of cell lines HT-29 and MDA-MB-231. In vivo study showed that the probiotic reduces tumor growth by repolarizing tumor-associated macrophages to anti-inflammatory state by repolarizing of macrophages from M2 state to M1 state. Nutritional therapy with the probiotic formula with Lactobacillus bulgaricus DWT1 reduces the side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and enables the full course of treatment for patients with colorectal carcinoma.
The probiotic formula with Lactobacillus Bulgaricus DWT1 inhibits the growth of cancer cell lines HT-29, MDA-MB-231, 3T3 and BJ. This probiotic modulates immunity by repolarizing М2 macrophages into М1 macrophages and thus exhibiting antitumor activity and tumor treatment potential. Nutritional therapy with the probiotic formula prolongs life of cancer patients and improves life quality and social functions of patients with carcinoma and their families.
